Arizona’s one of the best places in the United States for golf, but it’s not just because of the year-round warm weather — the scenery in Arizona is breathtaking and the abundance of land has allowed a golf course designer’s wonderland to spring up in the middle of the desert. If you’re headed to Arizona, don’t forget to pack your clubs for a few rounds at some of Arizona’s best golf courses:
Troon North Golf Club (Monument and Pinnacle), Scottsdale
If you can only stop at one golf destination in Arizona, make it the Troon North Golf Club. Both of its 18-hole courses, the Monument and the Pinnacle, offer outstanding views of the high Sonoran desert and Pinnacle Peak. Recently renovated by British Open Champ Tom Weiskopf, Troon North’s courses now rank first in Arizona and 21 in the nation — and it’s a family friendly course with packages available that include all the golf lovers in your life.
We-Ko-Pa Golf Club (Saguaro and Cholla), Ft. McDowell
Sometimes, you just want a plain and simple golf experience — with all that entails. We-Ko-Pa is all about golf, with two amazing courses that have earned numerous accolades from Golfweek, Golf Magazine, Sports Illustrated and Zagat. Cholla is a 7,225 yard course designed in a more traditional style with water hazards as well as striking desert views. Scott Miller wanted Cholla to be as much a feast for the eyes as a rich golfing experience.
The other course at We-Ko-Pa, Saguaro, is another traditional course made for walking — the fairways at Saguaro spill across the desert, following the natural contours of the land. Designers Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw were especially enamored with the shape of the terrain at Saguaro and incorporated some unique and tricky shots into Saguaro’s play.
The Boulders (North and South), Carefree
Golf doesn’t always run in the family, so if you’re looking for an Arizona vacation spot to cater to the needs of everybody on your trip, The Boulders may be your answer. Not only does it offer two Jay Morrish designed 18-hole courses nestled between ancient boulders and giant Saguaro cacti, The Boulders has a complete spa, tennis facility, and four swimming pools on site. Horseback riding and hiking are also available for your more adventurous family members.
