Ranked #13 in the U.S. by Golf Digest, Sand Hills is one of the most unique golf courses in the world. Just take a look at the pictures. I doubt there are many of you who have played a course like this one. Sure you have probably played some links styles courses or even some wide open courses in the Midwest, but Sand Hills is much more than that. Some say it is the best golf course built in the last 50 years. Having a reputation like that is not something to be taken lightly.
The location of the course is what I would call “ideal”, but it all depends on how you look at it. Located in north-central Nebraska, this isn’t even close to your typical resort course with sandy beaches or a course with elevated tees and island greens. The course can accurately be described as “all natural”. The following is from the Lodging Booklet at Sand Hills:
Apparently because of the great sand particules, the cost per green was $300 as there was no need for drain tile or gravel under the greens. The average cost of a USGA specification green is around $40,000. Do the math, that sure saved the developers quite A LOT money, which was obviously spent elsewhere to make this course even more amazing.
Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, Sand Hills is private but it appears that there may be ways around that as many people seem to get out there that aren’t members. If you are able to get out there and you need a fourth, give me a shout, I’ll make the trip without hesitation.
