Bluejack National, Tiger Woods’ first domestic par-72, 18-hole golf course, is now open. Located 40 minutes northwest of Houston, the private club and resort-style community sits on 755-acres of beautiful Texas countryside. Bluejack National is a family-oriented community that facilitates getting the whole nuclear unit out together on the golf course.
After experiencing the many different golf courses the world has to offer, Tiger decided to create his own geared toward getting golfers of all abilities and ages to play together. And how do you design a golf course tailored to all skill levels? Well, you make it more fun.
The one thing that bothered Tiger was how much time it was to play all 18 holes. When he designed Bluejack National, he was cognizant of time. It felt ridiculous that a normal game could take six or more hours to play. The speed of a round depends on the skill level of a player but also on the size of the course and how much traffic there is. If you want to have the whole family out for a game, then the design of the golf course had to be extremely playable.
How to Make a Family Friendly Course
To make the course less time-consuming to play, Tiger kept the course more open like Augusta National. At Augusta you won’t lose a golf ball in the trees. Even though the course is tree-lined, there are open beds of pine-straw underneath the tree canopies so you can find your ball if you hit it into these locations. This allows you to punch your ball out so you can keep playing at a relatively quick pace.
The Playgrounds
There’s a short 9-hole course called “The Playgrounds” that’s ideal for casual fun with family and friends. This is also the place to introduce new golfers to the game. Feel free to wear a pair of jeans while playing – the dress code is best described as casual. Tucking in your shirt isn’t a rule. We’re sure this relaxed atmosphere will draw plenty of new players to the game.
The Fort and Bunkhouse
Then there’s another place called “The Fort.” It’s designed to be the world’s coolest hangout offering an array of activities for every member of the family. The Fort features indoor activities such as a bowling center, a movie theater, a game room, a pottery room, a Classic American “burger joint” and an area called “The Bunkhouse” where kids can have sleepovers. Outside is a different story but no less exciting. There’s a ropes course, a swimming lake, a resort-style swimming pool, zip lines, an archery range, and tennis and pickle ball courts.
This is only Woods’ second complete 18-hole design. His first golf course, El Cardonal at Diamante, recently came to fruition in Cabo San Lucas while his other projects in Dubai and Asheville, NC have stalled due to financial roadblocks. So far, Bluejack National has received favorable reviews in the press.
