New England is known for its beautiful fall foliage and great seafood, but also deserves some credit for all the great golf courses there are to play. Today we tackle the best golf courses in New York State. Whether you’re a long-time resident or just passing through, these are must-play courses.
Bethpage State Park (Black and Red), Farmingdale
A jewel among historic golf courses in New York state, Bethpage State Park is the home to five exceptional courses, including Black and Red. Black has been host to the US Open twice, once in 2002 and again in 2009. Featuring challenging high slopes, Bethpage’s Black isn’t for the faint of heart — but it is one of the nation’s best public golf courses. Built between 1935 and 1936, Black and Red were designed by A. W. Tillinghast, one of the most prolific architects in the history of golf.
Turning Stone (Atunyote, Shenendoah and Kaluhyat), Verona
If you’re going to be near Verona, missing out on a day (or a week) of golf at Turning Stone will be the regret of a lifetime. With PGA-level courses designed by legends like Tom Fazio, Rick Smith and Robert Trent Jones, Jr., this collection of golf courses offers unmatched variety in play. Whether you’re a fan of tight, technical play, tricky links courses or something a little easier, Turning Stone has it all.
The Kaluhyat course is a 7,100 yard long, dramatic course with multiple elevation changes that rewards accuracy and strategy. Shenendoah was designed as a low-country links style course with the preservation of the natural environment in mind. Kaluhyat features treacherous and beautiful water features like waterfalls and lakes.
Leatherstocking, Cooperstown
Although Cooperstown is known for baseball, it’s also the home to some great golfing. Leatherstocking was designed to give players a challenging play experience, along with spectacular views. Built in 1909 by Devereux Emmet, the old-fashioned course features lake views, island tees and dramatic elevation changes. The forward tees are 5,180 yards and the back tees are 6,401 yards, allowing you to play the game at nearly any skill level.
